I have been looking in vain for the location of the neutral switch on a 1977 900SS. Took off the sprocket cover, and found no bracket nor place for a switch. Does the switch work off the gear box itself, or the position of the gear selector linkage? Position is not indicated in the service manual. Thanks in advance.

If the bike is a 1977, then it should have the removable gear selector box on the right side. This has a little casting that the switch would screw into and a cam that actuates that switch which is secured to the shift shaft by a set screw.
If it is actually a 1978 or later bike with the shifter mechanism internal to the engine cases, then the cam would be attached to the shift drum shaft that sticks out from the cases with a set screw. The neutral switch screws into a separate bracket that bolts to the engine.

I am one of the luck few to receive a bike ( '80 Darmah ) with a functioning Neutral switch. The biggest problem seems to be the chain wearing the brass cam down to a nub and negating its function. I have seen where we have bugged Steve to have new cams made, but he claims them to be Too Much Hassle. Could one be cast from Delrin?
