Hello BH Forum,
I've recently returned to Ducati ownership having purchased a 1978 900 GTS. I previously owned a 1979 900SS.
The fuel will not shut off regardless of the position I have the taps in. Are the taps faulty , and can I overhaul them? There is the balance tube between the taps. The taps look original as they have the nut in the body. Would appreciate some comment ?
Cheers
900 GTS Fuel Taps.
Re: 900 GTS Fuel Taps.
Yes,I had the same trouble over the years.I bought the newer type sugar cube taps. The washer/seal have ribs to locate them, worse than before, tend to slip around. On one trip I thought I was running out of fuel,no it was these poxy taps on full and not letting fuel through. One supplier refuses to sell them.
I got some more washer/seals for my original taps, these locate over protruding tubes, and I thought cured the problem.
Last winter I tried turning the engine over on my GTS.I then inspected the spark plugs, completey wet with fuel! I turned the engine over, with out the plugs in. Fuel sprayed from both plug holes!! Changed the sump oil as well. And the taps were both in the OFF position.
Long story short,I used some adaptors to take some Darmah type fuel taps, purchased from Mdina Italia,UK.
Conclusion
I had a GtS 900 over 45 years ago,Rode it til the late 80s,Never had a problem with fuel taps ever. Its modern day ethonel fuel, attacking the seals and crap rubber seals of low quality being sold. If you really feel you need to be original, just make sure that crossover fuel line is secured away from the rear exhaust pipe,I used a P clip. Well thats my experience,up to you now.
