Hi, just joined the forum.

I'm looking at buying an 860 GTS and was just after advice as to what to look out for.

I've owned many old bikes and re-built a few including more modern Ducati's. I have just sold my Kawasaki Z1A that I restored and fancy something Italian again.

There is a good looking '76 860GTS in a local shop that I have my eye on. It's only got 5700kms on the clock and has never been restored. The pictures look good but I have yet to visit and see it in the flesh. I was hoping somone could give me some advice on what to look out for and what they are like to own in general.

Cheers Nik

Welcome to the forum. I’m sorry I have no real answers for you. My bike is a 1978 900GTS, it has a different ignition system to the earlier models. I think there were also some internal changes like bigger crank pins, but I’m not 100% on this. You should look for something that has had regular oil changes and has not been left sitting for extended periods of time. The oil can eventually run off the bearings and the moisture in the air can damage the surfaces.

Cheers Colin,

I've been to see the bike now and can only describe it as immaculate ! It looks like it has been stood around for a while (such low mileage) but must have been stored somwhere very dry because there is no rust on it anywhere. Even the inside of the petrol tank looks like new. I'm hoping to test ride it this weekend.
