eliminating the battery from a 350 ducati scrambler

hello
i recently purchased a 1970 350 ducati scrambler. i heard there is a way to eliminate the six volt battery by using a couple of electrical components. I would like information on what these components are and where i could get them. im also looking for a spedometer cable for this motorcycle. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
