1988 900ss

I own a 1988 900ss and the alternator stopped charging the battery. When i removed the cover it was full of oil...............is this normal? if not where did it come from and how can i fix it.........if it is normal can anyone give me a clue to my alternator problem. I have checked all wires and conections and the regulator seem to be working ok. I recently replaced the battery and checked all connectors, I hope there is a soloution.
