PHM40 Dellorto pumper on custom 53mm intake manifold??

Is this a custom job or did ducati or after market companies used to make these manifold for the 53mm heads????

attached are pictures of my PHM40 mounted on special made 53mm conversion to accept PHM40??? I always thought you need the 58mm heads for the bigger intake flow...

somebody welded a sleeve onto the manifold so the larger inlet on the PHM carbie would fit

I have something very similar with the 40's on my 78 Darmah. The previous owner had some PHM manifolds slotted so that the 58mm PHM manifolds would fit onto the 53mm heads. Also, I think that the manifolds I have are from a 900ss because the rear carb's manifold orients the carb straight back towards the rear tire. Consequently I cannot use a standard 36 amp hour battery because the carb is in the way. And if I flip the manifold around 180 degrees, the carb hits the frame because it is pointed down and to the left.

no, the front manifold has almost a 90 degree bend, but the rear has maybe 20 or 30 degrees at the most. i will try and get a pic.

my rear one is turned up and its basically touching the frame, very hard to get to top of the carburetor to adjust cable play. but at least I got my bigger battery in ;-)...

Any idea where I can get a PHM40's 60/1 slide replacement??? I need 2x of them...

mine are all worn out from running without filters on race track....

Ducless,

Don't despair, you must have a rear SS manifold fitted, "as do I". I purchased the straight SS manifold when I fitted the 40mm carbs. Like your bike, I got rid of the huge Darmah battery, and replaced it with a smaller unit to allow for the carb to point back, instead of out through the side cover.

Battery technology has come a long way since the late 70s, and you do not need the huge 36A/H that Ducati fitted.

The important rating is CCA, or cold cranking amps. I have run an 18 AH battery in my Darmah for the last 4 years, and whilst it is probably a little small, it "has" done the job !!!

The ss manifold and smaller battery have not been a problem at all. The bike is a consistent 1 kicker. I don't even use the ticklers, just 2 or 3 good squirts of the pumps, 1 kick and we're off!

here is the pic of the rear carb coming out of the side, got rid of side covers long ago, battery is a seal gel type....
