Hi,

I recently installed new brushes in the starter, and initially all seemed well with a clear improvement in the turnover. However after a couple of runs, the starter would not turn over with what seemed a short (rapidly warming leads on pressing the button!)

So, off it (the starter) came again, - I checked there were no obvious shorts, but did notice the armature had "fouled up" - black oily stuff possibly graphite? from the new brushes. I cleaned it up, put it back together and again, perfect for 2-3 starts and now, the armature is fouled again.

The brushes were the right ones and supplied through BH.

Any thoughts??

I don't have any direct experience with the starters but I've messed with some others and have had a similar problem that was cured by cleaning out the gaps between the segments on the armature. If any conductive material is between the segments you will have high resistance/heat and the brushes don't like that.
