DIY Wiring Loom For Bevels - How Hard Can It Be?

As a fairly new member to this group with minimal experience I
would like to ask, is replacing the wiring loom on an old Bevel
a job I should contemplate or be leaving to an auto-electrician?

I have a fairly good aptitude for things mechanical and electrical
but haven't attempted this before. It doesn't appear to be too
difficult, but am I missing something here?

All comments and suggestions welcome and appreciated.

Building a replacement wiring harness could be a lot harder than it seems. Even with the old harness to copy if you crossed one wire by mistake the chaos would be epic. Lots of smoke and damage to the components. If you buy a harness you get one that not only works but looks good also. Unless it is a custom job it's cheaper to just go out and buy one IMHO. I've had two other replies via email discussing this and the opinions of both were, it's pretty easy as long as you pay attention.

I think I'll back myself and build it.

What would be really helpful is if someone has done this before and
could supply a 'cutting list' - lengths, colour codes, wire ratings, etc..

Anyone out there able to assist? If so, please post here so others can
also benefit.

750 & 900 SS Wiring Harness - Cutting List

What we need to find out is if somebody out there has taken notes
about building a replacement harness.

Things like:

Colour codes

Lengths

Wire grade

Qty by colour and grade

Pretty much your basic shopping list for a DIY harness.

If you can contribute part or all of this information, please post here!

Which old bevel are you talking about. A new 750GT wiring loom can be had for about £100 and - I'm told - can be quite easily adapted for use of a Sport. Not sure about other models. Try Mdina Italia

It's not that hard. British wiring (in Illinois) carries a lot of different colored wire, heat-shrink tubing is readily available as are those white plastic connectors. A good schematic will give you the color codes. What I did was to make a bunch of copies of the wiring diagram and with a colored marker trace ONE color wire on each page (ie: a page for the green wires, one for the brown, etc) Not hard, but time consuming....

Not that hard; just time consuming. Mine employs 3 relays; so it is 3 times more complicated looking.

Good tip masslaw, I think that's the way to go. I've got a mate who
works for a big electrical ditributor so I'm alright there, should be
getting the wire soon.

I am currentlt fitting a new loom to my SSD, one of the last jobs from full build. I have found most of the wiring digrams I have downloaded don't relate to any of the three looms I have (two std darmah and one built up) I am happy to take some photo's of a standard loom out of bike if stiil required. Plugs all seem to find homes only problem I am having are some spare orange wires from coils.

Hey, new owner of a parallel twin (76 500 GTL).

It needs a complete rebuild of the electrical system, so I was wondering if anyone suggests fitting a generic motorcycle wiring loom or simply following the wiring diagram and creating my own from scratch. The problem I have with following the wiring diagram is that there's no legend on it. The wiring diagram on this website is the same as what I have in the workshop manual, and neither of them has a legend. So I was wondering if anyone has experience with adapting a generic wiring loom kit to their duc.

There is a bloke in Sydney known as Phil the wire, he did my 75 3C Laverda,comes to your house and makes it from scratch ,amasing to watch took about 8hrs and costs $450.00 appr.Starts with 6 or 8 or so
wires differant colours and some sheath, pulls them through, cuts so holes in the sheath and away he goes.Top job and top bloke,I will private message his No to you.
