Last year, I purchased an 860GT that had been modified, and I decided to make one further modification to it. I cut off the flipped up tail section of the frame tight where it neets the angled tube lug that the shock mounts are directly below.

I hated the looks of the flip and it limited my options for what seats I could put on (my main motivation). Since the bike was already heavily modified, but in a well done manner, I decided to go ahead ond do this before I repainted or coated the frame. I made a nice clean cut and it could of course be reattached if nessesary, and i will keep the tail seciton, however, i can;t see anyone wanting to do this... namely me, and I never plan on getting rid of the bike ever.

My question is... as I know that this has been done by several people in the past... where/who can I go to in order to get a new standard tail section made? (By standard, I mean a hoop section inthe same dimentions that is on the Sports and SS model bevels). I have an original Sport seat unit I would like to place on it. I know I can mount the seat with out placing a new tail section on the bike, but I would prefer to do so for appearance and structural sake... if nothing else. Man... that orig. section I cut weighed more than I expected it to!! (But then again, *I* also now weigh more than expected, so....).

Anyone out there able to bend up something the right size and diameter for me???

Steve, from what I understand (which is only a little) there are
differences in the diameter of the tubing used and the actual
frame width itself between the 860's and the Sports and SS frames.

Something you might find interesting is to have a read of Jim Gilbert's
site and his experiences. He modified a 750GT (sorry Tom) to build a
Green Frame replica.

There are some good CAD drawings there showing
the modifications that were made to the frame. It might be helpful.

In an email conversation I had with him, he advised me not to modify an
860 but rather to look around for a 750 frame and start there. This doesn't
mean don't use the 860 to build an SS replica,
it was just his opinion - a more knowledgeable one than my own.
