Just tried to start the bevel ('80 900SS) having fiddled and fettled with the timing. Set the RITA at 35 degrees BTDC which is recommended I believe.
Result - big bangs and kickbacks - ankle just intact!
Very recent re-bore and valve overhaul (under 500 miles ago) so everything should be fine...... but this is a bevel!
Help!!

Hi Hugh,
According to the workshop manual on Steve's site, the ignition timing (for the Bosch system) should be 6 degrees BTDC, advancing to 32 degrees ...
Might explain something -?
HTH.

Ah yes, I agree, but I was just following the instructions for setting the timing for a RITA, i.e. bring rear cylinder to TDC, rotate to 35 degrees BTDC and allow a gap of 5.5mm between reluctor and pickup. Have I misinterpreted/missed something?

Sorry. Hugh, can't help with the procedure for setting the timing using a RITA - I'm still running the Bosch system.
(But sparking at 35 degrees of static advance can't be right, I would suggest?)

Problem solved. VERY embarassing. I am fessing up on line to cleanse my soul! Inadvertantly managed to set the timing on exhaust stroke. Half a dozen kicks and she was away, burbling like a good 'un.
I have completely re-built this bike in the past, so I should know by now.......
