installing dyna coils on 860
I am trying to install a set of dyna coils on my 860, i have removed the old transducer units and made a bracket to carry the dyna coils using the old mounting points on the frame, i have taken the 2 wire sheaths coming from the engine casing, each wire sheath contains 3 wires, and mounted them to the dyna coils, the dyna coils have 2 points of attachment on the underside, or the topside depending how you mount them, i have put the 3 wires, brown blue and green, the green having another green wire piggy backing off it going further into the system, all together on 1 attachment point on the coil and then taken an earth wire to the frame from the other coil attachment point, because everything electrically on the bike is either new or restored , the transducer units being the only exception, has what i have done correct ? do i need to split the wires 2 and 1 and delete the earthing wire ? has anyone else done this to an 860, my mhr has dyna coils but the set up is completely different so i can,t use that as a guide, i don,t want to kick it over and have something go boom electrically, just the engine, any help from someone who has done this changeover would be greatly appreciated

Replacing transducers on a 860
Hi Darren,
Apologies if I've misunderstood, but are you trying to simply substitute the transducers with coils?
Now I'm not an electronics engineer, and apologies if you know this already, but ...
As I understand it, a transducer is not just a coil. It also has a capacitor inside which stores a charge before releasing it to the coil when it gets a signal from the pick-up. (Some of them, like the one on my single, also have a zener diode which rectifies the ignition current that is generated by a magneto coil - don't know about the 860 tho'; think the ignition charge may come from the battery ..?).
As to the wires, I think you'll find the brown and blue are the signal wires from the pick-up. The green wire is an earth wire which, by grounding the capacitor, kills the ignition (via the ignition switch/emergency engine stop switch).
So things may be a tad more complicated that you might expect ...?
P.s. Have you talked to Phil at Road and Race?

thanks for your reply craig, for someone who is not an electrical engineer you threw more light on the subject than i was aware of, i thought it was just a case of a straight swop over, better spark like i now have on my mhr with the dyna coils, an just simply ride off into the sunset, it,s been a short week because of a long weekend so i have yet to get in touch with phil yet, i will let you know his solution to the problem, maybe i can still run the dyna coils, just wire it up different, i,ll let you know either way, regards darren
