Wide frame seat with Imola tank

Post by froggie »

Hi all,
I got a "wide frame" repro Imola tank that I could in principle install on my 750 GT.
Apart from the footpegs, gearbox lever, rear brake pedal and kickstart lever... there is also the issue of finding a "wide frame" suitable seat looking like the narrow frame seat of the SS.
THe SS seat is indeed too narrow for the 750 GT and would sit "inside" the GT frame.
Btw, what is the difference in max width between the rear tubes of the wide frame and of the narrow frame?
One option would be the seat of the wide frame 1972 750 Sport that had the same width frame than the 750 GT, although the Sport seat is a bit too long.
What are your views for the best possible combination: hacksawwing a raw fibreglass wide frame Sport seat replica to shorten it? Other?
If no solution, the alternative will be to keep the (nice) Imola tank as a decoration on my shelf :-D

grab a solo seat for a GT from GP (bikescreen.com) and after setting your imola tank on the chassis and sliding it a far back as the slots allow, set the new seat on there and cut it to match the rear of your imola tank with more clearance than you think you need and get an upholstery shop to make the seat cover for you. I have MOTO specific seat foam available for this. Remember, the knobs on the back of the tank will sit about the same height as the seat itself so you need at least an eighth of an inch clearance there so nothing rubs, cracks, chips etc.
