Update: As expected when I pulled the clutch, the plates were black so I installed a new clutch and drive cog with new 22kg springs. I was surprised it wasn't slipping given the state.
The Surflex 1425 kit came supplied with the longer springs so I had to buy these separately and everything works perfectly now.
