Thought this was worth a photo from a ride yesterday. A 72, 73 and 74 Sport. Now if we could just find someone with one of the 1978 specials produced for Frasers in Australia, we could have had a full house.

Yep. Sure is. In my opinion the best paint job of the Sports by a long way was 1972. I love the seat hump detail. Damned if i know why they changed it. And 170 km into the ride, that wider seat was looking pretty damn attractive!

I can see you're a man after my own heart. The 74 is mine. My reason/excuse is a combination of the following:

I prefer the "au natural" look
I'm basically lazy
I'd rather spend my valuable "bike time" riding than polishing

Around here it is quite rare to see one let alone three. I know of one but it is not ridden. It's rare to see any round case for that matter.
Only in Australia!!!
A friend of mine is restoring a '74 GT (it will be very nice!). I have a '73 GT and I guess we'll be the only ones within a couple hundred miles with two runners that get ridden.

Wonderful photos. Im basised but they are the best of the old school Ducati's. Did the 72 have a mechanical Tacho ??? Or has it been changed.

Good question, Gum. I thought they were electronic on the 72, but I'm not sure. The owner of that bike is a stickler for originality, so I'll have fun asking him when I see him later in the week.

Im just fitting my seat now. Just a delight, its so well made and fits like a glove. Could not have made it any better im sure. Now there must be a large gap between the seat and tank, so the seat can open and I take it so the tank can come off with out the removal of that superb fitting seat. Is this so ???

Nope. they are just painted black like the rest.

Now there must be a large gap between the seat and tank, so the seat can open and I take it so the tank can come off with out the removal of that superb fitting seat. Is this so ???

Mine doesn't have one. I can only open my seat to about 45 degrees. Makes getting the seat base off a pain if you need to get to the fuses during a ride. I carry a small socket rachet and 10mm socket in my riding tool kit (cause I've been caught out before!)

I went to a shop that specialises in o-rings and bought one to fit for next to nothing. From memory they are 100mm diameter x 5mm thichness.

Gum - Damien at Bevelrubber has tank hold down straps. See:

They are made from the right material so as to not weather and crack, unlike a standard O-ring.

You don't want your Sport having the same sort of problems as the Space Shuttle.

I am the "anal" owner of the 72 model sport on the photo. You are correct in that it should have an electronic Tacho. But as they never work I have left it in the cupboard and run with a mechanical one as I do want to see what the revs do, but the speed I do not worry about .....

The cam covers should be totally black as on the photoos. Only on the 72 was the lock for the seat mounted on the seat only and not on the hump. See photo.

Still a few things to update on the bike before its completed.

Is this an original '72 Sport? Looks fanastic.
And does it have welded steel intake manifolds like the '75 SS's? I've always wanted to know - just out of curiosity.
