Yes that seems to be the only way,once you've got a tool that you know is correct you can set the pickups then set your unknown tool to that,I borrowed one from mdina that was made by Mr Brancato to set mine,and then made one for myself,his cannot be adjusted so theres no chance of it moving.

Hi folks,I have a1980 darmah I wish to change the spragg bearing,I beleive the are like a cam belt on a car if you dont know how old it is then you should change it to be on the safe side,my problem is locating one here in the UK at the right price,so does any one have the spec and serial number so ...
