If the bike is a 1977, then it should have the removable gear selector box on the right side. This has a little casting that the switch would screw into and a cam that actuates that switch which is secured to the shift shaft by a set screw.

If it is actually a 1978 or later bike with the shifter ...

The typical failure inside the gear selector box is that the return spring breaks. It is a Ducati specific part which many of the Bevel parts suppliers carry.
