Gday, in total 4 boxes sent home via the USPS, cheap and all insured, 4 to 5 days and they are home, before me that is. The tank and parts in one, a cyl head, barrel and piston in each of the empty boxes you can see and another with electrical and other bulky items in it. All arrived safe as planed. Thanks Gum.

Engine Trouble.
Gday, we couldn't get the flywheel of to split the cases so we found a Ducati dealer in Alabama. They got if off and removed my old
tyres for $50 USD, money well spent. Now we could get those cases apart to get everything under the magical 32 KG. Next I have pack that engine for flight and so they cant damage it. Thanks Gum

Barber Motorcycle Museum.
Gday, While in Alabama we went to the Museum, over 750 bikes and guess what, they had a nice Ducati there. Thanks Gum

Hey Gum
With everything your trying to do in getting the weight under that 32kg mark and all , can I ask you were the cases still sealed before you split them ?
How many few over to the US
Was it just to pick the Bike up ""I mean the bits and pieces"" no holidays so to speak ?
What did the entire trip cost you bla bla bla are you realy saving that much in doing it this way over just getting it Shipped Downunder ?
Cheers Mate at least your still having fun

Cases
OK, got the cases apart in the back of the car, bought a plastic container from them Home Depot shop and some tie downs. Cardboard roll to protect the shafts and packed with foam and more cardboard. Then the tie downs on the container, yes half the engine, no gearbox is less than 32kg. Great all done and packed.

It arrives home.
With the frame and two full suitcases and the engine we check into LAX. Two extra bags as far as Qantas is concerned at $212 USD. Sounds good to me. I took the seat [ packed with gears ] in one hand and the headlight and gauges in the other as carry on. 15 hours later I march thru Customs in Melbourne and then onto Adelaide, all safe and sound with no missing or damaged parts at all. The first Ducati ever to fly in an Airbus 380. Next I have to put it back together, but I have just had surgery on my right hand so give me a few months to get my cast off. Thanks Gum

Wheels
I have started on the wheels. Cleaned the spokes, primed and painted, rubbed and painted again. New Old Stock Nipples from Road and Race. Cleaned the rims, should have a rolling Chassis soon. When I get the front hub back from Vapour blasting that will go together. Thanks Gum

Blasting
MMMMMMM, I have always cleaned my own parts and have heard people say about blasting and engine case's. My god, I just had my hubs done, yes they look good but that is the last I will get done. How does one get case's clean after this process, I can tell you never. IMO don't ever get an engine oil gallery part ever cleaned by blasting. Thanks Gum.

For the engine cases if you are going to do a number on them get them bead blasted , Vapour blasting gives it that Jap bike look where the pours if you like look to neat and tidy , old bevels didn't come out with that look , I saw Dan in Sydney about the finish and it was off putting to say the least , I had mine beaded and couldn't be happier , Hubs would look good in vapour as would the carbs but not the engine ,barrels and heads

Gum, by vapour blasting do you mean soda blasting? It seems that soda blasting is the way as the residue simply washes away with water and you can polish after. I hate to diagree with Martin but I would never let any glass bead get near internal components. What happens if some hidden glass media bits become dislodeged and circulate through you engine...not good I think. Post some pics if you can so we can see the 'mess.' Jordan

Yes Vapour = Soda blasting
I agree with you Jordan, that if the cases are beaded you need to make triple sure that you get all the beads out , I'm the past I taped over the oil feeds , left the bearings in the cases during beading , and after everything is washed clean and obviously replacing the bearings
another way is the bolt the cases back together and making blanking plates sealed with silicone and away you go
