75 / 76 front axle position

Hi All
With some 75 and 76's starting to come out of the woodwork , I noticed that some had the front axle end bar/pin horizontal and some have them pointing vertical. I would have thought that Vertical would be the correct way, so that nothing would catch on the bar as the bike is moving

What is the correct way to have the pin/bar pointing ?

The '75 factory brochure shows the bike with the T-bar inline with the fork slider - as good a lead as any, I guess
