My 1979 900SS has been "resting" for a few years but I am now in the process of getting it back together - I have had it since new and rode it for many years every day come tropical downpour (i live in Darwin, Oz which is a tropical climate - beautiful dry season and very damp and sweaty wet season) or fine weather until about 7 years ago. I am new to this forum but have already had very good help from Steve on setting up the wiring loom corrrectly - thanks Steve 8) . While my duke has been off the road I have been on the road with a BMW R80GS Paris-Dakar - not real fast but fun and plenty of grunt! This bike is very dependable and easy to ride - bit like putting on a comfy pair of old boots and the off road ability is handy here in the Northern Territory. More recently I had an oportunity to pick up a 2000 model Duke 900ie Monster - it had been dropped and needed new bars and some other minor work so got it cheap! This bike is quite a bit different than my 900SS - the power is awesome and handling very good but I must admit I prefer my old duke. I dont like the seating position at all and I find that you must keep the revs up unlike the 900SS which has all of that flexible grunt. I have had problems recently with the 900ie - maybe a faulty fuel pump - so its off the road right now - back to the beemer for a while! Slightly sacreligeous thoughts but I do wonder how that awesome injected 900ie motor would go in my 900SS frame!
