Hi Guys....
I am making an Imola race replica from a donor Darmah.
Virtually done now including some very cool "round cases"..
My question is, and I have searched this and other forums extensively.....
"what do I have to remove/replace regarding the flywheel, sprag clutch etc. Does anyone know and part numbers required etc.?"
Obviously have have removed the entire starter system etc including the gear behind the flywheel.. Can I just remove the sprag bearing and bolt the original flywheel back in place.? Parts diagrams are too confusing or not detailed enough.
Thanks.
completely remove starter assembly flywheel etc...
Re: completely remove starter assembly flywheel etc...
Yes, you can run with just the flywheel. You really don't even need the flywheel but your idle quality may suffer.
Re: completely remove starter assembly flywheel etc...
Thanks, but in the depths of time I thought that I had read previously that there was a bush or something that needed to be added to run without the starter ring etc...????

Re: completely remove starter assembly flywheel etc...
I'm actually restoring a 78 Darmah back to it's original electric start configuration. The previous owner had removed the electric start system. It was running when I got it about 5 years ago but not very well due to other issues related to carbs, pickup wires, manifold gaskets and valve settings, but it did run.
I'm certainly not an expert but I can share what I am having to replace and maybe that will be helpful?
Certainly the starter motor and starter relay. The starter spindle with the sprockets & shims and chain. On the crank shaft I had to replace the starter gear 799.50.070, the roller cage 0799.50.065, the sprag bearing, the cover for the flywheel assembly 0799.50.190 and the washer 0799.50.188. Items that remained were the washer 0799.50.070 and the bushing 0799.50.050. The flywheel and the primary gear (20).
Hope this helps.

You will need to cover the oil passage in the crankshaft that feeds to the starter gear and sprag bearings.
Part no. 076947077 - BUSH 29 X 34 X 26 for the 900SS is the bushing you are thinking of.
Can be easily made by a machine shop from steel tube, the only tight tolerance is the bore that fits over the crank diameter.
Steve has one - Part # : 0769.47.077 a bargain for $12.97

Thanks Mark,
That’s exactly the info I was after, I had a recollection of such a “bush” but wasn’t sure.
Appreciate it....

Hi Mark
I should have said the bushing that was left in my Darmah was the 0799.50.060 and not .050. So the 060 bush should have 3 X 2.0 mm dia holes around the circumference mid length and are required for the electric start unit to lube the sprag? Good to know never would have guessed from the drawings.
Thanks
Bob

Re: completely remove starter assembly flywheel etc...
Yes, the bush for electric start should have holes and is heat treated and ground to be the inner needle bearing race for the starter gear.
After the engine starts, the big gear is stationary with the crankshaft spinning inside of it.

My SD Darmah is running without a flywheel now, definitely makes for a lumpy idle and a responsive throttle!

I took all that stuff out, spotwelded the three holes of the bush and pronto.

Mark,
Thanks for confirming the info on the 060 bushing. Good to know it's going back the right way. Did not realize there was the potential for 2 different bushings.

You may need to change your gear shift shaft to match your clutch cover.
Mine was too long so the smaller diameter where it's relieved was in the seal area resulting in oil drips and misting on my boot.
Darmah's came with a long one - SECTOR GEAR SHAFT L=149 PART NR 079913150 and a short one - SECTOR GEAR SHAFT L=134 PART NR 076913150
I'm interested in seeing your "round cases".

Hi Mark,
Yes I actually ordered a short shaft today from classic spares, it took some finding to make sure I got the shorter 134mm shaft.
The “round cases” came from old racing spares and are beautifully made.
I’ll try to post a couple of pics.
