Do I need to change valve seats for lead-free gas?

Post by 81mhr900ss »

Hi folks:

I'm finally going to get my 1981 MHR back on the road after 28 years of storage. When it was last on the road, in the UK, it was fed leaded gas. I remember something about having to mod the engine to run on lead-free and recall it may have been the valve seats. Can anyone confirm that this is necessary?

No, That issue related to cast iron valve seats. Ducati use a bronze alloy so no worries.

As Bill ..

Nope.

In fact, DON'T do it. Way, way, too many stories of it all going horribly wrong ...

(And me, I don't use any lead replacement additive either - not in my twin, not in my singles, not in my Laverdas. And I've had no valve recession in +/- 100,000 km).

Just saying ... :-D
