Pantah Starter Motor - All advise considered.

Post by redorca10 »

1980 Pantah 500 SL
My Pantah's starter motor squeals like a banshee when I push the starter button. A previous mechanic drilled a hole in the casing so a small amount of grease can be squirted in to remedy the noise. This works for awhile, but the noise soon returns and I don't really like the idea of just squirting in grease for the rest of my riding life.
I am considering pulling it apart and seeing what is happening. Before I do this, are parts still readily available for these old motors, is this a sensible approach or should I replace the motor? Can you still get motors that fit as I have read a few times that modification need to be made to newer starter motors so they work.
Thanks Alistair.

Thanks Steve, I've had a good look. It is very hard to tell. Are there any distinguishing features or dimensions I should be looking for?
I get the feeling I'm going to have to pull it off first?

if it looks the same/very similar to this, than that is what you have. Click the link and look at the other photos, and, look at the 1 other starter motor shown as available (but is different as it has mount tabs on the other end). Earlier bevel drive DUCATIs had HUGE starter motors. This is maybe 6" long and 4" dia from memory.

Thanks Steve. Not far off, about 4.5" ish and 3" ish diameter.
I've got next week off so will pull it off then make a decision about the unit or reburb kit.
Cheers mate.
