Restoration almost complete. Won’t start

Post by Blackandgold »

HNY! Thought I’d post an update to my 900SS restoration which is almost complete.

I am having issues with getting it started. So far only a few backfires and some savage kickbacks. Kind of wishing I went with an electronic ignition to avoid all the bruises.

I’m guessing it’s a timing issue so will take it to a pro for a final look over. I was hoping to get it started, would have been a nice way to finish the project. Any ideas are welcome.

Also, any tips on getting the center stand spring on? I’ve already stretched one out of shape trying to get it on.

Here are some progress pics.. cheers!

Might help to give some more details such as:

- motor rebuilt or not?
- carbs rebuilt or not?
- bosch pickup wires changed out or any other electronics changed?
- power to the coils?
- spark?

Could be something very simple or something bigger.........................

Unless You've done something VERY extraordinary, Your bike HAS electronic ignition. But switch two near identical wires from the pickup and trouble starts. Follow the manual and everything should work. Don't forget a bevel crank spins backwards.

Thanks Steve,

Indeed it could be anything as it’s a complete rebuild, hopefully something simple.

Engine and carbs rebuilt
Electrics replaced. The resistors were omitted (wired out)
Has spark
Will check power to coils

Ducadini - Apologies, by electronic I meant electric start as opposed to kickstart. I’ve booked it in to be looked over. Cheers.

Simples.

Get a pile of simple, plain washers and insert them, one by one, between the coils of the spring. The more you put in, the longer the spring becomes. When it's the length you need, fit it in place and then pull out the washers.

(You can use coins in place of the washers).

Re: Washers... Genius. Will try this, thanks!

I was using a rope pulley system which came close but no joy.

its easy to bend the spring coil and slip in a washer or penny etc. Do several alternating side to side to stretch the spring length. Or, pickup and heavy duty spring hook and be done with it in 10 seconds.
