Albany Hill Climb, Western Australia

Post by machten »

Hi,

An event last weekend on the south coast of Western Australia. Great fun. A ride on Saturday then a hill climb event.

Seven of us with bevels and a few other bikes went down there for the weekend.

Some nice bikes of various marques down there..

Marco's 1946 Gilera Saturno 500 race bike - lovely piece of kit

Image

Genuine SFC - original paintwork and all. Note the Vincent HRD on the start line.

Bob O'Leary's ride - Jap engine in a featherbed frame - goes like hell.

450 and 900SS at the start grid

750 Sport at the start grid "the Jap Slayer" (OK it was only up against a Honda 125 - but it was race prepped!) Damn thing was nipping at my heels every run in the tight bits up the top of the hill.

Video of Jap Slaying (click on the image) - well, at the start anyway! No probs getting to the important first tight corner (out of view) in front, but he was faster through the tight bits and only ended up between 0.5 and 1.5 sec behind me. I've put in new pistons and rings 1000km ago, so I wasn't hammering it, but I was glad it wasn't an RD 350, or I might have had to gone enduro and found another way down the hill rather than front the bevel lads at the bottom.

For those that are interested in classic bikes in general (and a selection of Ducatis) I notice ranmar has posted some excellent video and photos from the weekend.

Great photos and thanks. Also, was the Gilera from Greenough?

Hi Ian,

No. The bike is based in Perth. I thought the owner bought it from Italy, but I may be wrong. I'll check when I see him this weekend at the Moto Italiane Ovest.

Kev,
I looked more closely at the photo and realised that the Gilera I was thinking about is a later 1953 model. It has been for sale for a while. There can't be many of these Saturnos in Australia.
