Tyres for a 250 D 'yellow'

Post by in-two »

The sun has just come out here in central Italy so I have dragged out my newly restored '74 250 D to check it out in preparation for this year's MotoGiro D'Italia (plague permitting). The tyres are barely used, you can still read 'Dunlop' on the tread shoulders) but were on it when I bought it in 2013 so I thought I'd check the date code... Three digits, so made before 2000 and no way of telling which decade...! The tread is harder than my thumbnail (don't know it's Shore number, but still a precision instrument...) so new tyres it is. It's a very long time since I bought tyres for a small bike so I wondered if any of you singles riders had any thoughts or favourites? I use AM26s on my twins and have a fondness for Michelin, who supplied literally thousands of slicks for our endurance racing efforts back in the day, but just need a steer as to who makes a reasonable 'performance' tyre in small sizes, 110/90-18 rear and 90/90-18 front, I think. Don't really care about appearance and can't imagine I will be troubling even a V speed rating, or be bothered about longevity. Would love to hear from anybody with real world experience on a single (who can still walk and feel their fingertips...).

I'd put on a pair of Avon 26 90/90-18 and call it a day.

Thanks Steve, my thoughts exactly but wanted to ask. Good to see you are keeping the BevelHeaven flag flying,
