Veglia speedo drive observation

Post by 81mhr900ss »

Hi all: I just inspected and cleaned my 81 MHR Veglia speedo drive. When I first checked it, the tab drive ring moved easily enough but it felt like the thing was greased; some moderate resistance. I did some research, even found a 10 year old thread here where Steve advises using a 50W oil dropped into the tiny hole with the spring-ball depressed. I'm very confident that this thing hasn't seen new oil from the factory. I removed the circlip, tab ring and rubber/plastic seal from the backside. I filled the thing with a light oil from the drive ring then turned it many times (about 15 minutes) with a paper towel inside the shaft hole. Lots of black stuff came out that eventually turned very light grey. Meanwhile the friction on the drive ring disappeared; the difference was very significant. I'm going to repeat later to see if I can get the excess oil to come out clean.

Maybe time to check yours?

Yup. Should be done every time you take the front wheel off....
