1980 900 SS wheel size

Post by jsey »

Hi
I recently acquired a set of Borrani wheels complete with hubs disc carriers, and everything else. I was surprised to find that both the front and the rear were WM3 / 2.15. Anybody know if that can sucessfully be done. I always thought the rear needed to be a WM3 2.50

My 77 900 had WM3[2.15"] rims as delivered. It was the later Speedline and other cast wheels that were WM4[2.50] this was done to allow use of the wider tires that were coming into use at the time. The real kicker is that I gave away my orig. rims long before they were worth thousands of dollars apiece!Oh well maybe the Dymags on it now will appreciate with another 20yrs.

First a small correction. 2.50 wide rims are referred to as WM-4 not WM-3. WM-3 rims are 2.15 wide. Your 1980 SS would have had a WM-4 rim on the back but wire-wheeled SSs were fitted with WM-3s which required a narrower tire.

For a 1980 bike you will need a special disk carrier to match the larger rear disk mounted on these bikes. I got mine from Mdina Italia in London but they may be available from other sources. I am under the impression that they are produced in small batches by someone in Germany. They are certainly a quality piece and the price reflects that.

Everything else should fit on your bike.
