450 RT

Post by FullHedge »

I'm starting my first restoration project on a recently aquired 71 450 RT,
it has the lighting kit on it. And I've been told that I don't need a
Regulator/rectifier for it.
Help !!! OK , I grabbed my meter and started checking things out, at this
point I got spark, but I still don't know about the rectifier/Regulator.

Come on Guys, you all have Bevel Heads with electrical systems, how
about some advise. Please.

Any help is Greatly Appreciated.

The 450 RT differs from all other 450 s . it has a flywheel magneto system
the white wire goes to the A.C. coil . the red wire is for the lights
no need for a rectifier
the 450 also has a different profile on the cam that open the points
( to saturate the A.C. coil ) there should be AA 367 B stamped on the
automatic advance unit ( advance is 18 degrees )
static advance 7 degrees , fully advanced 25 degrees

Magneto wiring

Post by FullHedge »

Thanks a ton Eldert,

The wires coming out of the Magneto are both Yellow, When I rang the
wires one of them is tied to ground. The other is not, Do you think that somebody changed the Magneto is the past. I'll double check my readings. Any thoughts on the yellow wires ? Or further advice,

I did wire the open wire to the coil and tied the other to the frame,
gave the bike a couple of kicks and I got spark. I'll try leaving the Ground
wire off, and put a light on the other. And give it a kick.

i got the colors from the desmo cross special instructions for use and
maintenance book . but when i went into my garage to look at my RT
both wires where yellow . no one swapped alternaters on your RT
all other widecases have 3 wire alternaters . exept for the later electronic
versions . they have 4 or 5 wire alternators ( only 74 and 75 widecase models had this )

Well at least I'm not crazy then, could you tell me on your RT
what happens with the yellow wires, does 1 of them just go to the
AC coil and the other is used for lighting ?
will it matter which goes where ?

I really appreciate all of your help.
