alternator or regulator 900 GTS

Post by aerobics mc »

Hello all, I'll try my best to be stringent. My 1979 900 GTS has always been a easy starter - with the starter motor removed... The bike has been used extremely sparsley for close to 20 years. Now with a new battery the bike won't start and the battery loses it's current. A fuse also burned.

I wonder if I should go for the regulator or the alternator, or maybe both? What diagnostics can be useful here?

I'm sorry it the topic has been covered before, and for language flaws.

Kind regards, Daniel

I would start off by going through all your connectors, clean with contact cleaner and put a dab of dielectric grease on re connect. And, put star washers under all grounds. Run an additional ground from (-) terminal of the battery to where your clutch cable is threaded into the boss on top of the transmission. I also drop the motor and buff/sand the lower part of the frame down tube where the motor is held so you have good grounds everywhere. I think you will find the connectors at your regulator are semi melted and will need to be re done...

Thanks Steve, much appreciated! What I particularly like is the bottom up approach, starting of with the basics. I will check into the issues you mentioned, trying to find some way around dropping the motor.... 8)

All the best/daniel
