SS running hot on the rear

Hi Phil 1. What plug are you running? In the 1980 owner's handbook I have, it lists Champion L88A (altho' Walker says otherwise!). The modern NGK equivalent for this (Ducrappis always seem to prefer NGK to Champion) is usually listed as B5HS BUT it's generally reckoned that the B7HS is the one to go...

Painting on chrome

Hi dlearl476

Ryno750's advice is good. I had no problem getting my 450 Scrambler's chrome tank re-painted, here in the UK.

I think you need to find another painter - someone used to period British Iron would be good.

Ciao

Faulty running

Hi Brian, 2 thoughts: 1. The carbs are not as clean as you might believe. In particular, the idle air drillings could still be at least partially blocked - they are especially difficult to clear. Without these operating cleanly, you will find it next to impossible to achieve a tick-over or smooth lo...

Hi Chris I suggest it'd be worth you getting a copy of Ian Falloon's Ducati Twins Restoration Guide which gives a lot of detail about the various engine modifications. In general, the Darmah engine was an improvement on the SS engine, particularly as regards the big-end bearings and ignition, and al...

High detergent oils

Hi Airmale Ah, thanks for the reference. If I'd seen that before, I'd have queried Mick about it ... :) But anyways, I've certainly been led to believe that high detergent oils should generally be avoided in our engines 'cos of the danger of them carrying too much crud in suspension thru the (Ha! Ha...

Roller bearings 'skidding' on full synthetic oil

Hi Colin Yeh, I know some of the Zane Laverda engine failures have been put down to roller bearings 'skidding' instead of rolling - and thereby developing flats - with the finger being pointed at full synthetics as a contributory factor ... And I can certainly see why a friction device like a starte...

Oil

Hmmm, so Mick badmouths GTX in what you're reading, does he? Well, he certainly didn't back then ... Which book is this, btw? Mick's retired now so I don't know how contactable he is. I used to phone him rather than e-mail - and preferably when I had at least 40 minutes to spare :-) Tony Brancato is...

SS or SD engine

According to Ian Falloon, the DM860 90**** series is the designation for the electric start engine that was first used in the Darmah SD and later in the electric start S2s and MHRs. Kickstart only SSs & MHRs use a sequence that starts with a 0 (including 090**** which is where the confusion may have...

Oil - (oh, why am I doing this?)

Hi FWIW, Mick Walker was happily using and recommending Castrol GTX 20-50 in Ducati bevels 30 years ago ... That said, I still use straight 40 in both my Ducrappis - mainly 'cos Tony Brancato tells me to :) But perversely I use 20-50 in my Laverda Corsa, even though the engine design is basically th...

Original plating of non-painted parts

Hi Most likely to be cadmium plating - at least that's what was used on my 72 Scrambler. Cad plating can now be very hard/impossible to get done, at least here in the UK, 'cos of issues about disposal of heavy metal plating residues. I got mine done by one of the few companies that has a licence to ...

MHR green

Hi Vince

Well, it may help to remember that Mike's bike was painted not in the Italian national colours, but in the sponsor's colours - Castrol.

But whether Ducati then used the same colours, I couldn't say ... :?

The insulation on the pick-up wiring

Hi Steve FWIW .. A small point, but I don't think it's the oil that causes the insulation to fail. The same pick-ups and wiring were used on Laverda triples, safely installed in an oil-free environment - and the insulation comes off the wiring just the same ... So, for this at least, we can't say it...
