Thanks Steve. After I posted I did a bit more searching and back out to the bike and, lo and behold, there is TWO holes. One is very small but obviously very important. All now good - off to get the registration organised.

I have followed the instructions, which were great (especially as I spent ages trying to find some sort of circlip), to rebuild the master cylinder but for the life of me I cannot get it to bleed.
