How to seat lower headset bearing inner race?

Post by Peter Tourin »

When you replace the lower headset bearing, how do you seat it? Do you fabricate a tool that's a pipe with the proper ID to drive the bearing evenly?

yes - just a piece of pipe and pound it on. You can heat up the race to make the inner hole daimeter larger and it will slip on also.

Yep - I realized that regular black pipe from the plumbers supply is about 1" ID and just fits. I just stuck a piece in the lathe and trued one end.

The outer races look simple - I assume that if I stick them in the freezer and heat the frame gently I can tap them into place pretty easily. Any tricks that'll help?

Thanks - Peter

3/4" all thread, several large washers and a nut on each end. Tighten them up to seat them. voila
