750 Tank - Single or two colour?

Post by TomGC61 »

What is the difference between a two colour with badge and single colour with decal Tank and side panel? Seems there are lots of bikes around which crossover in terms of age and colour scheme. Would love to hear from anybody who could give me any information about this.

The single color with decal tanks are early examples. They also had decals on the side panels. Many of them also had a slightly less refined seat shape and cover. :rad:

Is there a date when it changed? Also when did the frame stop being silver? It seems a lot of later bikes have been changed to this scheme.

i think the transition was late '73 early'74. I'm pretty sure the decal tanks were also fiberglass. The year designations were pretty flexible,my '75 is really a '74 but they were sitting around in the distributors warehouse so they reassigned the Vin numbers from what I've heard. Most all of the 750GT's have equipment differences depending on what was around at the time of assembly.

Thanks for the enlightenment! Is there any way of checking a frame number and engine number were as matched when they left the factory and also are there any detailed data lists available to check specs?

I've heard in the past that there was a fire at the factory and all early documentation on the bikes was lost. Not sure if that is true but I know from experience that its hard to track down info on my 72' GT.

Hi Tom,
Not sure of your question about matched frame and engine numbers but the numbers weren't matched in respect that if you had a bike with matching frame and engine numbers, it would be an absolute rarity.
To see if your numbers are in the ballpark, go to Bevelheaven main site and look in the left hand side of the page for the Technical Info and click on Data Index.
At the top of that page is the frame/engine list for the various types ie. round/square case and singles. Click on that and you will see the list compiled of known bevels.
Hope this helps.

I seem to recall there is also a link on ducatimecchanica.com that says how many of each model were produced for each market. I have an early 73 US model 750GT (made in 72) with fiberglass tank, decals, leading axel fork, Lockheed brakes and amal carbs. These were painted either red or black. A few 72 models with metalflake paint on the tank may exist. Berliner brought a very small number into the US to test the market. Bob Wycoff of the Sport Spot had one to try, but I think he returned it to Berliner. My current 750GT is one of the first that was sold by the Sport Spot, which was somewhat legendary back in the 60's and 70's for dealing unusual brands of European motorcycles. My brother Paul bought his 750SS Ducati at the Sport Spot too. Bob's son Chris is still riding one of the early MV Agustas. Bob Wycoff knew every detail about the bikes too.
