Hi
I am about to get the tank and side panels on my 900GTS painted. I need as much info as possible on the sizes of the side and top stripes on the tank.
Side of Tank
* how wide are pin stripe lines?
* how wide is gap between pinstripe lines above and below main panel and the main panel?
* how wide is main panel?
Top of Tank
* how wide are pin stripe lines?
* how wide is gap between pinstripe lines above and below main panel and the main panel?
* how wide is main panel?
* how far back from petrol filler opening is the "Made in Italy" decal and how much gap from the stripes is there?
Hope somebody with an original paint job can help me here.
I intend going for the red tank with grey panels and pinstripes. Any specific details of the particular colour/shade these should be would also be useful.
Many thanks in anticipation
Steve

Re: 900 GTS Paint Questions
Hi Steve,
I also am restoring a late '78 900 GTS and have been unable to find answers to all those same questions you posted in this thread.
My tank is painted all black and I plan to repaint black with gold stripes, so if anyone has any info on the stripe measurements and possibly a colour code for the gold I would be most grateful!!
Cheers
Mike

Re: 900 GTS Paint Questions
Hi
I actually managed to acquire an original set of grey transfers for the sides of the tank so can provide exact measurements.
The top and bottom pin stripes are 5.5mm wide. The gap between the top pin stripe and the central block is 4mm and the gap between the bottom pin stripe and the central block is 4.5mm. The central block is 60mm wide. The gap in the centre of the block for the badge is 29mm x 182mm. The gap starts 25mm from the back of the central block.
The front of the shape is too complex to describe but I have tried scanning the transfer and then printing it. The size and shape came out perfectly so if you PM me your email address I can send the files
Cheers

Thanks Steve,
Great info!
Do you also have the measurements for the stripe down the center of the tank?
I sent you my email, not sure if you received it.
Cheers

Re: 900 GTS Paint Questions
Hi
As I said in earlier post I managed to get hold of a set of original transfers for the sides of the tank. The 2 files below join together to give you the exact shape of the transfer and when I print it the size is correct also.

Hope this is useful to others

I may be somewhat late into this thread but if there is any further information requirement then my '77 900 GTS has original paint and decals that I can measure.

Hi Colin,
Never too late!
Are you able to provide the measurements of the centre stripe on the tank from your bike?
Cheers
Mike

Re: 900 GTS Paint Questions
Hi Mike,
I've just taken some measurements and some photos and although with hindsight I shouldn't be surprised, but I was!
The rear part of the centre gold stripe measures 15.0 mm at the rearmost point, 15.8 mm at the mid-point and a full 16.0 mm close to the filler. The front part, i.e., that part forward of the filler measures 15.0 mm along its length. This may suggest that the decal started out life at 15.0 mm and fuel spillage has caused it to swell and spread a little in the vicinity of and behind the fuel filler.
The gap to the outer gold stripe measures 2.5mm consistently and the outer gold stripe measures 3.0 mm consistently on both front and rear sections and on both sides.
The "Made in Italy" decal is located 36 mm behind the middle of the filler cap "tang" and the rear decal starts at 7.8 mm from the middle of the same "tang". The front section starts at 4.0 mm from the outer edge of the filler cap flange .
As usual the "Made in Italy" decal should always be located at 85 deg. to the tank centre decal, either left or right swing, rather than be square on at 90 deg. in order to maintain authenticity.
Some photos:-
I hope that this info and photos will be of some use but let me know if you would like any more photos or measurements, this bike is a bit of a time capsule.
Best Regards
Colin
