I have options in my shop for your consideration

Both the above are viable options for bevel drives.

Steve:

Glad to see you started carrying Mobile V Twin 20/50. I have used this in every one of my bikes (excepting my Multistrada, which specifies 10/40), including both bevels, for the past 7 years.

Congratulations on your new purchase. As far as oils go we recommend that a good quality mineral oil be used for bevel drive engines. Most importantly we recommend changing the oil & filter every 8000 miles"

I am pretty sure that would be a typo and he meant 800 miles (roughly 1000 km). If it is not a typo I would like to buy an engine from Vee Two with a 8000 mile waranty. They can seal the engine at their shop after they put in the oil :)

It is supposed to be the same as the old Kendall GT1 oil which I used to use in my bevel racebike.Really good oil,I never had any noticable wear on my cams, rockers or trans bits.I think it also extended the life of the rod bearings too.

Read all the info and opinions.

One thing I do know is with oil as many things you get what you pay for.

I've used these oils - Penrite for years in my Alfa's and the right up on their Enduro 4 stroke seems to fit the bill for my 500SL Pantah.

Apart from that I always lie to buy Aussie where possible :-)

was advised today to nt use the Penrite - quality has gone down recently apparently.

So it looks like Mobil or Valvoline for me - leaning to the valvoline.

Valvoline is not SG rated any longer so it is not a smart option for bevels

After many years using Castrol CRB50 (no longer available) and BP Corse 50C (and occasionally Corse Plus - multigrade) have discovered Castrol Sport Edge 25W-50 and have just put the first lot in my 750 GT (currently 86,000 km, engine never been apart, oil changes every 2,000 km, owned since 1975). The Castrol tech guys in Melbourne were very helpful and seemed to have a good understanding of the requirements of Ducatis and older vehicles for which a straight 50 grade oil is/was recommended.

See http://www.castroledge.com.au/product/product_25w50.php

From the downloadable pdf Product Data sheet at http://www.castroledge.com.au/downloads ... 200601.pdf:

"Castrol Edge Sport 25W-50 is a high viscosity, high performance petrol engine oil formulated to satisfy modified engines, including older technology street machines and “big bore” competition engines. This oil is also recommended for large inboard power and ski boats, 4-stroke motorcycles, and high performance V8's.

Castrol Edge Sport 25W-50 is a premium quality SAE 25W-50 engine oil. It has been specifically formulated to give better cold start performance than traditional "straight 50" oils. It is race proven for power and performance.
Product Application
Ideal for:

• "Big bore" 4-stroke motorcycles; e.g. Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Laverda and Moto-Guzzi.
• Competition use.
• Veteran motorcycles and motor cars where high viscosity oils are specified or required.".

• Resists viscosity breakdown at high temperatures giving higher viscosity at extreme temperatures than traditional "straight 50" oils.
• Synthetic components increase load-carrying characteristics for crankshaft bearing protection in older technology street machines and “big bore” competition engines.
• Formulated to give better cold start performance than traditional "straight 50" oils.

OK - so it's all from the manufacturers blurb but I believe that Castrol knows a thing or two about engine oils. We'll see ....

Steve - the product info sheet mentions the API Service Rating as follows:

"• SAE 25W-50 API SG/CD. Incorporates full API SM detergent and sludge control additive system."

I found the following to be a useful summary when researching the API Engine Service Classifications:

http://www.unitedoil.com.au/apiclass.htm

Cheers,
Steve.
