Valve Stem Seals

Post by peaky »

Hi Guys! I have a 78 Darmah SD and am doing the desmo adjustments. Last time (2000 miles ago) I replaced the valve stem seals. What is the interval for these things? Should I replace them everytime? Thanks!

seals

If they start leaking replace them. They should last a *long* time. You could replace them at each valve adjust but it doesn;t seem required to do so.

Where are the valve seals ?
I took off the valve covers on a 1978 Darmah head and a 1980 SS Darmah for comparison I sure can't see any seals.

The book shows an o ring type fitted.

Any thoughts ?

Depends on head configuration, but simple O ring seal in a groove cut in the guide was the earlier practice, yes. Effective until it hardens. You have to have a lot of wear before guide sealing becomes a significant issue.

No; the O ring is about 1.5cm down in the guide from the top. If you have hte vlave out, yes you can see it.

So, I understand there is no chance to replace that o-ring without pulling out the valve !??
I guess I have to replace, because after 13 years of sleeping the engine smokes a little from the horizontal cylinder......

cheers
