'shim paper' & bearings

Post by Brian NZ »

I started stripping my square case Ducati motor last night and noticed
that some of the bearings that sit in the engine cases are being held in
by metal 'shim paper' (the best description I can think of). The motor
was rebuilt years ago by a 'reputable' Ducati enthusiast.

Is this common practice? Iv'e never seen it before and it seems a little dodgy as the 'shim paper' is on one side of the bearing, not a piece either side to hold it central.

Do you mean that the "shim paper" is around the circumference of the bearing as it sits in the case? If so, it may mean that the old bearing (before the rebuild) had seized up and spun in the case wearing the case larger.
