Clutch adjustment procedure

Post by wrinklygit »

Hello again, after my previous post on clutch slip,I have ridden the sd fairly gently to let everything bed in after a winter lay up & had no more problems with clutch slip until yesterdays ride at a much faster pace, when slipping occured after 5000rpm going through the gears, however in top gear the bike will hold 80-90mph with no slip, even uphill. My dilema is this,if I tighten all 6*4mm allen bolts fully I incurr clutch drag.I have now backed them off 3 full turns (previously set at 5 turns out) & readjusted pushrod to take up all free play in actuating arm then back off a quarter turn (in the same manner I would adjust a BSA or AJS clutch). The manual I have is very vague on this subject, other owners I have spoken to seem to accept that slippage occurs, all my adjustments have been carried out on cold motor, plates are in excellnt cond, cable is new & well routed & rod /balls are well lubed, what have I missed,I'm sure help is out there somewhere, regards MIKE.

OK now take off the sprocket cover, and clutch cover.

tighten up the bolts on that clutch completely. You are going to be in BIG trouble if those things back out. They need to be tightened up!

OK now loosen up the clutch adjuster locknut and back out the adjuster a few turns, reinstall the sprocket cover. Re-adjust the clutch so the actuator arm has that 1mm space between it and the cover.

button up the clutch cover and everything else you may have undone. That should do it.

Hello again Steve, coudn't wait until Saturday, got my head around your instructions & have just returned with a still fairly light, fully functioning, nondragging, nonslipping clutch, YIPPEEEE !!! I'll also add a tip of my own (I'm not too proud to admit to this & it may help others)after you have slackened the handlebar end clutch adjuster, make sure you also slacken the gearbox end, oops !!!
Thanks again Steve for taking the time out to help us bevel owners around the world,if you ever visit the UK I definately owe you a beer for this one,MIKE.

As you know I updated to forum software to the latest version as well as mOved everything to a new Linux server and decided to shorten the location URL so it is now located at http://forum.bevelheaven.com - the topic is still in the same area, and the new search function works well.

Go to the engine and transmission section and look for "clutch pushrod info" or something like that. It is always on top (a sticky).
