can anyone please advise what battery turns this over strongly? It's hard to start, and if I'm going to replace the battery, I want to put in one that works well. Are lithium batteries good in these bikes?

well, i fitted the biggest Motobatt battery. it's had a new sprag clutch. Still won't start. Turns over maybe half a turn, and stops. I don't want to keep trying: last time the sprag got #$%^ed.
Any suggestions?

Sounds more like a starter circuit /equipment issue than battery if battery is new.
Starter motor??

well, that's what I'm thinking too. But I'm having trouble locating a new starter for a 900S2.
Has anyone got one?

it's ducati p/n 0799.50.800
but if you google that, virtually nothing comes up. I'm hoping that something else will. I guess I could take this one out and try to get it overhauled.

You are in OZ? In NSW call Dave Ward at Moto Italia, there are fixes for this issue Im sure. He will know.

I had similar problems with my Darmah and resolved it when I found mis-alinment in the motor bearing bushes causing a serious drag on the starter motor shaft, did some bodging with the cover bushing and its all good now.
