Engine Flush Out

Post by mizike77 »

Getting ready to put the top end back on the Darmah engine. Some minor debris is visible inside the lower end from me wrestling off the siezed piston. Just some rubber mallet particles and some gasket dust. Whats the best method to flush out the lower end? I was thinking of filling it then sloshing it around and draining out a few times. Any thoughts?

If you can see things try using a dowel or even a coat hanger with a blob of grease on the end to pick up the bits.A bit of cloth securely attached to the rod and greased or even oiled will pick up lots of stuff too.The problem with trying to flush it out is the crankcase has the gasket running down the middle and holes to allow oil to flow to the pickup screen. So the little bits may not make it to the drain and get stuck on the gasket or in one of the nooks and crannys. If you do want to flush it you could use mineral spirits and slosh it around then drain as best you can follow that with some10w40 and run it till warm and drain thoroughly then follow it with your normal oil.
