My first vintage Duck

Post by mizike77 »

I just picked up a 79 Darmah. The bike was in a basement for over 20 years. The engine is siezed. My plan is to learn as much as possible before I start the project this fall. It will kick over with the clutch in but wont turn the crank. It only seems to turn the trans. Is this normal, some sort of nuetral saftey or is it broken?? Also, my bike has a 2 into 1 pipe, drilled discs and 40mm carbs and no side stand..and I think around 15K miles. Are the discs and carbs stock for that year? Im trying to find a copy of Ian Falloons book but am having no luck.I see there is another guide by mick something or other. Whats the best guides and manuels to get? Let the games begin!!

Get the manual,Read it carefully. If you are lucky the rings have rusted to the bores. If you aren't it will likely be expensive. The rotors and carbs have been added.Stock carbs were 32mm and the rotors were undrilled. The two into one pipe is an add on also. If it is a Conti hang onto it, They are really hard to find.

My Verlicchi 2-into-1 doesn't work too badly. Its loud as it is a straight through design but is quite light. It did make it more difficult to change the oil as the whole system had to come off so I've switched back to Contis.

Hey Bruce

Hope you have changed those death trap wheels ?
I'm still coming to terms with your color choice every time I see your bike.

Are they FPS or Speedlines?? They look horribly like my FPS which I thought were ok. Am I missing something here??

those are speedlines - I would not ride any bike with them. It simply isn't worth taking the risk.

They are Speedlines, the bike is now almost 30 years old and they still look solid. Because of the high magnesium content they tend to corrode easily and so need repainting occasionally to keep them in good condition. Having said that I have almost everything needed to build up a set of spoked rims - Steve, I'll be getting some stainless spokes from you before long.

I'm considering going back to the original black and gold which might be a great relief to some! Anyone care to give an opinion?

Bruce , Black and Gold would look much nicer over what you have at the moment and value wise would also be higher, take the wheels off and hang up in the shed for ron , and get a set of spoked rims for her, she will look like a new girl again and pull a lot more looks as well

black and gold........ FOR SURE! This is one of mine, the day I got her. I will get to this bike pretty soon, spoked wheel set is planned for this bike.

FYI this is the FPS wheel set

I have sticker kits for all versions 900SS, and can get you set up with spoked wheels ready to bolt on as well. Do you need 2.15 F and 2.5 R or 2.5 F&R?
