Hi Everyone
I have just got my 2nd Duke a 79 SSD that someone in the past has painted a red in color gggrrrrr. I now going through the process of trying to get the colo matched up but here is the but I dont have a panel with the correct shade of blue/silver that I can get a color match from , same goes for the wheels they are the same red i would need the gold code as well if anyone has got it

Is there anyone that might have a side cover they want to sell me ?

I'm also after the chrome blinkers that have the reflector on the outside as I have been told its a US issued SSD , I'm in Australia and the bike still hase the US compliance plate on it and has been registered in the NT once before, getting it re-registered wont be a great drama but since it is a US SSD I thought why not leave it like it is and try to get the parts somehow

I would also like to know if the SSD came out with the shocks you can see on the bike as I was told they are of a 900SS and were an upgrade on the SSD

any help would be great where I could get my hands on the parts I need

thanks Martin

check out the BODY AND PAINT section in this forum for some hints on color codes. Keep in mind no factory 'codes' are available, and they were not consistant from the factory. WOuld be best to find someone in your neck of the woods with an SSD and take it to your painter to color match. Barring that, pick up Ian Falloon's ORIGINAL SPORT AND SUPER SPORT book for excellent color photos on the bike

Hi Steve

Yes mate I will get some of those blinkers in time to come

Are there any good Ducati wreckers in the US ?

I have a lot of pictures on the SSD online so far to give me a better idea what she should look like when she is all done

The gold colored rims some pictures I see have them all gold and others have part of the rim left as polished alloy are the wheels supposed to be all gold like the MHR was?

Thanks Martin

Hi Martin

Congrats on getting the SSD.

Colours: This is a reference I've been given (I think originally by Andy Nienhagen) for the silver blue: VW marathonblau-metallic (L96M) bzw. VW A01-127717. Don't know about the dark blue, tho'.

Otherwise, someone (albeit in the UK) who is more likely to know than most is Dennis at Motorcycle Resprays. As well as being the bloke who painted the bike that a certain Mike Hailwood rode around the IoM in 1978 (or so I've been told), Dennis has done enough SSDs in his time to have a stencil kit for doing the white bits and the dark blue bits (DAMHIK). So he also knows just where the colour changes occur.

He may be worth a call - no e-mail, I don't think ... And if you do ever discover codes for the 2 blues, please let us know!

T: (44) 1285 658645.

Fairing brace: No, not original; but worth keeping unless you're desperate on originality.

Wheels: as Steve said, FPS wheels on later SSDs had polished rims. FPSs without gold rims are either warranty replacements for the original Speedlines; or later fitted, and ex-MHR.

Shocks: Pretty sure thay all came with Marzocchi gas shocks with round grey reservoirs, as shown on the publicity brochure on Steve's site.

Finally, if you can, can you please send me a private message with the frame and engine numbers (I keep a little register, you see ..
(Sad, I know, but I don't get out much ... HA! Mine was the only SSD at World Ducati Week this year! 3,500 mile round trip via the Pyrenees and back thru the Alps! Fantastic!)

Ciao

Hi Craig
I'm starting to get that duke feeling back in my blood, even though my MHR Mille is no longer stock with a F1 front end on it and a different red to std etc.
This SSD I want to fully restore to new condition
The lighter blue of the VW color [L96M] I have had a look at a mates paint shop BUT I didn't know that the dark blue was painted on from factory, I got a full set of stickers from here http://www.reproductiondecals.com/defau ... .html~main but if they were painted on then I might have to sweet talk Jason my painter who dose custom work on cars mainly but he will do my bike he said. at the end it all comes down to $$$ dont it
I will give Dennis a call later today your time
I dont know what I will do with the brace just yet but it wont be going back on thats for sure, looking through the some of the older bikes, some of the GT's had a brace maybe its from one of them
The wheels I dont know what type they are I dont get the bike for another 2 weeks you could say sleeping is becoming harder to get so to speak. in the picture of the wheel shown below what have I got ?
The rear shocks I was told are of an 900SS as these were fitted to some of the SSD so I was told but I'm looking for a set of stock rear shocks at the moment , got any LOL I think its going to take some time to track them down might palce an add in the wanted section be as gooda start as any

one last thing the sticker kits that you can buy for the SSD, the full set that is, how close is the dark blue of the sticker to the original on the bike

the sticker kits blue color is exact [on the kits I stock anyways]. I know, I repainted 2 SSD recently, and compared the original colors to the stickers etc etc.

the dark blue striping was NOT painted on, they were stickers.

Hi Martin

Re. the dark blue - sorry, I may have confused you with bad wording in my earlier message. As Steve correctly says, the dark blue was originally done with decals, NOT paint. (And thinking about it, I may be wrong about Dennis doing the dark blue with stencils - it may just be the white he does that way).

One thing to watch out for is positioning the ones on the tank. As Tony Brancato showed me, Darmah tanks are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Looking down from above, the curve on the left side, at the front, tends to be slightly further back than the one on the right. So if yours is like this, don't fret too much when trying to position the decals perfectly!

What else ...

Your wheels look like late model FPS, i.e. with polished rims. This would fit from the engine & frame numbers you gave me. These make your bike one from the second production run, which seems to have been around November/December 1979. Most, possibly all. of these appear to have been shipped and registered in 1980. As you'd expect from the history of your bike, bikes with frame numbers 950886 & 950895 also went to the USA - see below:

Year Engine Frame Location
1979 903539 903138 U.K.
1979 903629 903231 USA (NY)

Btw, this is what Ian Falloon gives for production numbers (altho' I don't really understand his definitions):

Production numbers (Falloon’s Standard Catalog of Ducati Motorcycles)
SSD 854
SSD UK 100
SSD US 100
SSD Oz 386
Total 1,440
