Gum,
According the 750 bible by Ian Falloon the early production 750S numbers fell in the 750900-751700 range (1972).
The 1973 production engine numbers were in the 752800-754100 with the frame numbers in approximately the 752800-754000 range.
He says these numbers are approximate.
Yours appears to fall into that early 1973 range. Does the frame number fall in there too?

What numbers were you given for the bike ?
That black plate is just the Homologation plate that was fitted for the muffler identification and they all had the same numbers for the round case engines
Here is an interesting read for you, click on the pictures to got to the sub-menus enjoy, I know you'll like it

The frame number of the the 750 Sport is punched into the front of the headstock behind the headlight.
On one it line it should say DGM 9595
The line above it should be DM750S followed by a star, then a six digit number. That is the frame number. I think the seller is indicating that your number is 752938. According to Falloon, that matches up well with your engine number of 752828 as a 73 Sport.

Gum,
If those are the numbers for your frame and engine, then no one can dispute it as a valid 73 sport. The 73 Sport/GT was one of the most "consistent" numberings of the roundcases (which doesn't say too much). Once you get into the 74's the rules on engine numbers (Sport vs GT) get a lot more random.
I suggest you purchase Falloons Ducati 750 bible, but be aware, what he provides are approximations, as the full data from the factory is just not available. Having said that, it is exceptional, "must have" information.
If your's isn't a valid 73, I'll eat it. Just provide the salt. (oh! and the bike)
