stripped case threads 750 GT

Post by gerard collier »

the 22x1.50 mm threads where the sump screen fits into my case
are "GONE" previous owners epoxied the plug in place. I cannot get a Helicoil to repair the hole without spending about 6-800 bucks to get
Helicoil to make a miniumn of 100 pieces.
any body got a fix for this "nightmare"

Hi Gerard
I have just had the same experience with the thread in the exhaust port , I have been told that I could use a thread chaser and try my luck that way or have the thread bored out and get a new threaded sleeve welded back into place.
With your issue why don't you try to get a oversized plug made it would be far cheaper

a 'plug' would not be a fix, if would get rid of the only partial filter in the engine.

Gerard, Go online to timesert.com under the metric listing they have 22x1.5 listed. Timeserts are pretty easy to install as they are a threaded sleeve and the kit contains all the tools needed the only drawback is the kits are kinda pricey But I'll bet it is less than 600 bucks! And you could maybe make some of your money back renting the tools out.

i love timeserts. and use them on smaller fasteners all the time. I have great faith in their ability to work well.

That said, I would wonder if this would really work for the job here as the sump area of the case is so incredibly thin, I think you would at best have mayge 3 or 4 actual threads cut into the sump, as the top of the timesert has that ridge that needs toget cut into the sump so that everything fits flush.. That is around 2 or 3 mm thick if I recall, and the sump is only around 5 mm thick there??

I think boring out a ring, welding in a new ring and tapping the correct thread would be the best fix for this.

Steve, The case is pretty thin there but I think some green loctite and careful handling would prove a viable repair. At least it would be worth a try,as machining a ring and welding would require the cases be at least removed and preferably split. If the timesert didn't work it wouldn't cause any further damage. In looking at the timesert website it shows the insert is used on some BMW and Alfa oil pans.Possibly there are some shops in Gerards area that would have the insert kit.

I contacted timeserts and the "oil pan kit" is 450.00 with 5 10 mm
inserts, as I am splitting the case anyway I think I will ck out the possibilities of welding in a plug and drilling and tapping to fit the new sumpscreen filter
I can weld it myself and get in on a mill at work to d&t.
after reviewing the timesert procedure I would split the case anyway to make sure it is alighned properly as I have the cyls off.
I will have it split tomorrow, look the case area over and go from there.

guys, thanks for all the feed back, bouncing ideas around sure makes things easier.
Gerard.

ps, I am almost there !!!!!!!!!!!

welding duck cases

Post by gerard collier »

the rod I used was 4043. I had used this rod in years past to weld
up the intake ports on vw cyl heads, most castings have a higher
silicone content than sheet or extruded parts and this rod has been used on castings for some time. start to finish from heating to finish machine
work was about 3 hrs.
hope this works for you

sump screen

Post by gerard collier »

steve
I found the part I need in the gasket kit I received today.
I removed the threaded pin from the case bottom and fit the rubber
piece in place, the new sump screen threaded in and fit into the rubber
thing perfectly !!
Looking in through the r/h plug you can see how the screen and that rubber thing prevent any particles from getting into the main oil galley.
