Old Duke, New owner

Post by My750GT »

G'day everyone,

Just dropping a line to be sociable. My father bought a second-hand 71' GT in 1974 for the princely sum of AU$850.00. That same motorcycle has been with him ever since until recently when he handed it on to me. That very same motorcycle is the reason that I wanted and got my motorcycle licence. Sure, its not the most co operative bike, and it does have its little idiosyncrasies. But hey, its Italian, what more do you want. Anyway, now that I've got the old girl and I now know of this forum, I will be making the most of everyone ones knowledge.

Cheers,

Darcy

Hey Darcy, that's great, what a neat way for you to be able to keep your father's presence with you... I have a pal who's dad gave him his SSD Darmah a few years ago, and we did a pseudo restoration on it - she's pretty and a runner.. He tells me every time he even looks at that SSD he thinks of his pops. And whenever his dad comes over they always get out to the garage to check on the old bird, er, tiger.. Welcome aboard.

Hey Darcy,

As Steve suggested, how great that your Dad passed on the bike, and that you've elected to keep it going !

Hang onto the old girl, as 71GT's are like rocking horse poo. very rare to see one here in OZ.

What state are you in ??

Cheers
Rick.

I live in WA. My Dad has told me in the past that his/my bike was one of two that came into the country at that time. He's not sure if that was totally true, but who knows what went on back then. It would be good if I could trace the engine numbers. Though I've been told that there was a fire at the factory once and all the records were destroyed.

Well, well, well. A bit of a surprise. After reading the list of Roundcase owners I've been able to get a better idea of the vintage of my bike. It appears that mine in not a 71' but a 72'. Engine number ends with 933. My dad has always assumed it was a 71' because the original transfer and rego papers read that it was a 70'. He knew that wasn't possible (unless a prototype found its way to Australia :-D ) So, it goes to show that databases and filing systems in the 70's weren't the best. I will be submitting my bike details to the list in the coming days. As for the photo's, I will get that up and running once I've given the old girl a bit of a tidily up. No respectable Italian woman would be caught dead without her makeup on. *-*
