Cylinder base gasket - 900 bevels.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone in here could shead some light on this subject.

On some of my bevels, the former owners has used both a paper gasket and an aluminum/metal gasket on the cylinderbase (between cylinder and engineblock face.
On my 900 SS the rear cylinder had a paper gasket, then the aluminum/metalgasket and then another paper gasket.
On my 900 GTS both cylinders has a paper gasket first, then an aluminum/metalgasket and then another paper gasket.

My question is - whats the purpose?
  • Lower compression?
  • a better seal?
  • Other reason?
To my understanding these bevels was born with just the paper gasket and having my 900 GTS engine pulled apart right now, I am wondering if these aluminum/metal gaskets has any specific use/purpose?

Any thoughts / knowhow on the subject is appreciated :)

Cheers
Martin

Maybe someone adjusting the squish clearance from one cylinder to the other??????? Can`t think of any other reason really...............were both bikes bought from the same previous owner??

Hi Lumpy,

I guess that could be a reason.
The bikes came from two different sellers, so don't think that is the reason.

Did a bit of research last night, and found a UK based webshop that sells these Cylinder base "Shims".

Still puzzles me though.. shimming what?

I never found any ally gaskets on any bevel (except for the singles for detuning).
Shimming on twins : getting the compression on both cylinders a bit more into the same range (Guido didn't always check that).
Could be that the bikes were handled in the past by the same mechanic.

An alloy gasket? Sounds to me as if someone was trying to reduce the compression for easier starting. Only other explanation may be the bevel shafts were replaced at some point and possibly mis-matched and too long?

I got a bunch of copper base gaskets with the DomiRacer inventory I purchased after they shut down - FYI.

I've used aluminum base gaskets on my bevel, they work just fine. I think I got them from Reno many years ago. They might have been something he had made or amkt. stuff from Italy. I generally use a smear of Hylomar,Hi Tack or Coppercoat on them for insurance and haven't had any leakage issues.
