Installing Gearbox Spring (pre 1978)

Any tips on installing the gearbox spring (part 0400.13.130) - No 37 on diagram - back on the fork plate - No 36 on diagram - of the gear selector box on pre-1978 Ducati 900SS? I've taken mine apart and am replacing the original spring with a new replacement (purchased from Steve).

It's a bit tricky getting the ends of the spring to stay on the opposite ends of the plate tab - I was successful a couple of times after much prying and fiddling. But as soon as I release the pliers holding the spring down, it pops right off the plate.

Very frustrating. Any tips appreciated.

Thanks,
Herb...

Its been some time since I've been in one but if I remember correctly you put the spring on the spindle, spread the spring with the tab on the plate, hold everything together and install it in the cover lining the slot in the plate up with the eccentric screw. Sounds alot easier than it probably is though.

Yes, that's ultimately how I got it to stay in ... don't take your fingers off the spring until the whole unit is reassembled.

Another question ... I'm using Permatex engine assembly lube for all the shifter box components but wonder if I should be using a heavier grease. Any tips?

I prefer MOTUL Tech Grease 300 for this kind of stuff.
