Cam nut removal
Cam nut removal
Hi guys! I am restoring a 73 Ducati 750 GT. This is a total tear down, every nut and bolt, every bearing, every gasket resto.. I'm having trouble removing the nuts on the end of the cam shafts. I have at least one bearing that is suspect, but this these heads have been exposed for about thirty years and I want to make sure averything is in good condition. Any ideas. They are tight as hell and I can't hold the cams without damaging them.

And much the best thing is to use the correct tool to lock up:
a) either the entire engine
b) or just the camshaft.
The former you can do using a combined clutch locker like this:
The latter using this tool that Steve sells - and I can do no better than repeat his advice :
"This is the safe and correct way to do this - don't risk damaging expensive bits trying to wedge in something..."

Re: Cam nut removal
Thanks to both of you. I wasn't sure if they were right or left handed threads. I tried both ways, but it was difficult to hold with the heads off. At least knowing which way to turn will help. Thanks again.

Use an impact wrench or hold the bevelshaft in a vice.

Thanks again for your help. Knowing that they are left handed threads help immensely. I actually removed them by putting the shaft in a lathe to hold it and they loosened right up.
