Starter chain link direction

Starter chain link direction

Hi All
This might be a stupid question, but here goes, installing a starter drive chain with the link on top, which way does it face ? I would have thought that the tails would be pointing to the rear of the engine, is this correct ??

work out which way the the chain runs on start up
tails to the rear
