Hi
My 76 900ss the exhaust pipe at the rear cylinder now glows red hot even at warm up . Is this likely to be ignition timing or carb issues or something else? Any suggestions appreciated

When was the last time you replaced the carby rubber spacers ?
Sucking will will cause all sorts of damage, at idle you say never heard of that before

Let us know the outcome

Something related to carb sync, for sure.

So it could be leaky spacers, something plugged in the carbs or ?

Time to R&R those carbies. I have had this happen to a customer bike after carb rebuild while doing the sync. It was dramatic to say the least. I fired the bike up and was syncing when the customer came by. One of the pipes started glowing..... Took awhile before it stopped while I was fiddling around with the adjustments on the carbies. Yes I was using carb stix and following my own advice.

I would be checking the ignition 1st on a early squarecase.
They are the major cause of headaches on most of the early ones.
